My wife went to the sketch crawl in the Brookland neighborhood of DC yesterday, and since I of course had nothing better to do, I decided to go with her and just wander around on my own. It was a gorgeous day for it; 78 degrees and very low humidity. We had lunch at the San Antonio bar and grill. Their chiles rellenos and spinach enchiladas were excellent. Best Mexican food I've had since Route 66.

I'll probably be making more work from the images I collected in the coming weeks/months.

This is a piece about the criticism of America's response to Haiti. While I certainly would agree that some things might be handled better, at the same time I kind of think that the whole thing is being over scrutinized. I mean maybe we'd have more room on those planes for food, water, and medical supplies if every news agency in the world wasn't shipping an average of fifty reporters each to the area.

Yesterday we went to the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary's annual Thanksgiving with the Turkeys. This year we had a very pleasant day for it too. Not until about half way into the meal did the clouds start to roll in. Even then, it still didn't rain or get unbearably cold. Much better than last year's 30 degrees and high winds.

They had some new animals this year. We met a very sweet (and enormous) cow that was obviously a recent addition as it was still emaciated. Erin reached over to pet her nose and the largest tongue I have ever seen shot out of its mouth and tried to lick Erin. It reminded us of our dog, Frida. There were also some horses that we didn't remember seeing last year. We were wondering if perhaps some of them might have come from the hoarding situation in Baltimore earlier in the year, but we never did find out.

The food was excellent as usual. It's always such a welcome treat to be able to eat anything on the table (it's all vegan) rather than being told to "just pick out the meatballs".

Can't wait to go again next year.

On Saturday I helped my wife shoot the Get Your Rear in Gear 5K in Fort Hunt, VA. It was fun to shoot something a bit more active than what I usually get to shoot at work. And I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by how well the D3000 and 55-200mm VR was able to follow the action.

One group of runners ran in kilts and carried foam shields and weaponry. The men in the group even ran bare chested. When running amongst the other runners they looked like the invading hordes chasing down the peaceful villagers. The man pictured above is probably my new personal hero. And since I know you're just dying to ask... no he isn't.

I've been getting all kinds of new stuff lately.

This is a (not very exciting) test shot with my new D3000 (+ kit lens). So far I'm happy with it. In keeping with my previously stated philosophy, I've decided that I prefer to spend the bulk of my discretionary funds on getting me out of the house and into the world.

Next on the list is to start planning my next vacation. Perhaps in the spring I might plunk down some money on a cheap mountain bike.

The recent loss of access to the DSLR I was using combined with the recent acquisition of a new point-and-shoot camera has caused me to once again consider the timeless wisdom behind the phrase "less is more". The above piece was created entirely out of shots I made on a 45 minute bike ride with my new Fuji F200 EXR. So far it's a purchase that has worked out well for me. In fact I feel kind of stupid that it never occurred to me before how well a point-and-shoot would fit my digital collage workflow. My collage work is all about experiencing the world around me and lots of, you know... self-indulgent introspection. When I was a child, one of my favorite things in the world was wandering around on my bike. In every sense it served the exact same role that my collage work does today... and it certainly didn't hurt that there were a few sweet jumps mixed in. So the F200 has made me realize that I have been thinking about equipment all wrong. The biggest hurdle I face in making the images I want to make is not the lens I don't have or the body that won't meter with manual focus lenses. It's the fact that I'm still sitting at home. And when I did go out my camera was prohibitively large making it impossible to bring with me. This revelation made me realize last week that my most important piece of photographic gear is actually my bike. Because let's face it, I don't find this stuff in my living room.
